Also when installing the filter I usually have to do a odd spin and roll it past the junk in the way, so I have incorporated that into my removal strategy and I spill a lot less oil these days. I find wiggling a bit helps as well as finding the best hand orientation so your hand is not also getting in the way. My best advice is take your time and I always pull towards the drivers side from underneath when getting it out.
